Well most of it is either made/modified by me. I got the plain white zentai suit from zentaizentai.com and modified it myself. the Helmet and back piece were made by me. Wig/boots/gloves were bought on ebay.
Was there something in specific you were wondering about?
I found this over on memebase.cheezburger.com (their Fandom Base section) and came over the link to here on DA.
Anyways - I love the pose and the mood here, as well as the cosplay. Fits the title pretty well. I especially love the GLaDOS headpiece. I take it you had a light installed in the main eye, but it wasn't working? I gotta admit, that didn't wreck suspension of disbelief in the least because the makeup and the wig really made up for it.
What gave you the idea to paint your upper lip black but not the bottom one? It's an interesting effect that catches my eye, and works nicely with the rest of your makeup.
Also, I can't tell, but did your cosplay have something fitted to your back, or is that part of a post on the stairs? It's a little hard to tell in this picture. And because it's black and white, it actually helped the scene. XD
Yeah, the larger orange light was lighting up at the beginning of the day but the wiring job was a little shoddy, i'll have to fix it before wearing it again. Thanks for the compliment! I havn't worked with facepaint before so this was definitely a learning experience. I only painted the top lip because when I had painted both lips in a makeup test I found it made my face look really bottom heavy and it seemed to attract the eye to my mouth rather than where I wanted it : the headpiece. Painting only the top lip really helped keep the eye focused on the top half of my face (I think anyways)
There is a back piece yes! I have only one picture that you see it in but even then it's not the full piece, it runs to the ground and on the end are a bunch of severed wires , it mimics a part of GLaDOS you can see if you look closely, a part that runs down her side, only hers is black whereas I chose white so it would go with the costume better.
Yeah, I draw the chassis pretty often, so I pretty much "got" the box, and the dangling cable. (I found one of the pictures of the back of the costume shortly after posting my comment, and mentally smacked myself for not at least investigating your gallery FIRST... *mutters*)
I remember the waking up scene in the game pretty well, and she's got more balanced white and black parts in that one before fixing herself up from the damage. So I think given that scene, and the way you had your GLaDOS looking, it works for that aspect.
That was your first time with facepaint? O.o
I'd never have known if you hadn't said something...
Anyways, I agree as far as the lips. Black lips against a white face can be a bit too strong a contrast. Whenever I draw that kind of look, I just make the lips really shiny to throw some white highlights into there. I'm not so sure how well that works in makeup, so I think your doing the upper lip actually works fine.
It also does something interesting with your expression in the cosplay. I think it'd bring out the snarky expressions, the frowns, and the deadpan faces in a way that both lips being the same color wouldn't.
Well thank you! The facial expressions being saved by the lip markings was definitely a happy accident. These were my first ever 'I'm really trying here' cosplay pictures and it's my second cosplay ever so I feel like the whole thing was a series of happy accidents. I'm not photogenic at all so these turning out the way they did was extremely surprising.
I'm definitely not done with her yet though. I had so many more plans and ambitions but I've not the talent/experience to pull it off. It needs more, I think anyway. More damage, more detail, especially the back piece. I gotta sit down and sketch things out and really get this cosplay looking presentable,it's the first time I really poured my heart into a costume out of utter love for the character and I'd like to do ol' GLaDOS justice.
You know what might help? Good reference photos of her chassis. Maybe just tweaking one or two things about the back part without going all-out might have another "happy effect." Or whatever - I figure you'll get more ideas than I can come up with, given that it's your cosplay.
Trying to think....ahah, forgot I did post some of the reference pictures someone sent me of GLaDOS' chassis on Photobucket to share with friends.(This one friend sent me a huge-ass folder FULL of pictures, but some are especially useful.)
Ah, thank you very much! I was having a hard time finding good pictures of her from different angles. I think i'm just gonna have to sit down and sketch out some ideas, I'm not terribly good at painting/drawing but I'd really like to add in those areas that are the crackling paint on the helmet/backpiece, for something that just looks like a bunch of lines i'm having a surprisingly hard time drawing them!
Hmm. Trying to think there. I have a LOT more reference pics - just give me a shout if you need an another pic. The crackling paint isn't something you'd see unless you look at her close-ups. One idea I just got was to express the crackling in make-up. Sort of like a slightly tarnished android?
I think part of the trouble is GLaDOS' body is a complex shape, made up of a lot of simpler shapes. Maybe the tutorial over on my blog (I've completely forgotten where it is >_< But it's findable via the archives if you're patient :/ ) Once you get the simpler larger shapes worked out, it gets easier to figure out where what can go.
You may want to also check out the various designs for her on DA and elsewhere. They might give you an idea?
Yes, I've been looking at other people's designs trying to draw inspiration. I'm trying not to go too far from where I am, I like the design I've got I just think it needs a little more of..something. What that something is though I have NO idea haha. I thought about having cracks in my makeup, like the 'enamel' of the face part is broken or something. I'll definitely have a look through your blog and see if I can't find that tutorial and have a look. Thank you by the way for being so helpful and putting up with my rambling!
