Chestarmor Sakuyamon Wip by Elita-01 Chestarmor Sakuyamon Wip by Elita-01
Chest armour for Sakuyamon is nearly complete. This is my first time doing any sort of armour and I think it shows lol. The symmetry isn't great and thank GOD those straps will mostly be hidden by pauldrons or I'd be upset. It looks oversized on me but I think once the other armour pieces are on it'll jive better.
I've got so much to learn! I really wanted this to come out nicer and this is already a complete redo from my first one which was a lumpy piece of garbage!
OH well! Trying not to rag on m yself too much considering this is my first armour piece, there's nowhere to go but up from here right?

never heard of sakuyamon but it doesn't look too uneven. cant wait to see your final product! :)

Really? Maybe I'm just being overly harsh on myself. If it's not too noticeable then I'm happy!

yeah don't be so harsh! if i had to be nit picky i would say that symbol on the left isnt as clear as the right, how are the other pieces coming along?

Slow, painfully slow haha. It's my first time making armour and it's proving more difficult than I originally thought. The giant shoulder pieces are almost done and though they're more bumpy than I would like I don't really have the time to start over.
The Helmet is slow going but it'll get there and I'm still stumped on the leg/arm pieces.

In short: I've stepped just a tad over my comfort line in terms of what I think I can do skill wise but oh well, gotta challenge yourself right?

So I looked up Sakuyamon because I had no idea, i think this piece is a great start. The other pieces look tricky! What materials are you using?

I totally agree with challenging yourself and making yourself improve daily :) keep it up!

Since I'm a complete beginner for armour my methods/materials might seem kind of laughable haha.

The shoulder pauldrons were made using paper mache and balloons, coated with a water/wood filler mixture sanded and then coated again with Gesso and wet sanded from there. They are a little more bumpy than I would like, probably from me being careless with the paper mache and thinking the wood filler/gesso would smooth out any lumps, I've learned my lesson there.

The helmet is currently being shaped out of pink insulation foam board and that too will be covered with gesso and wet sanded for smoothness.
For the arms/legs..I have no idea, I'm going to try heat forming craft foam and strengthing it on the inside with something (a stiffer material maybe?) to keep a bell shape, I'm really just flying blind with those and will be mostly experimenting, heh.

This is all a huge learning process and I'm glad to do it, I'm hoping I can soon start moving away from these simple materials and maybe try something more complex

That sounds really fun! I want to get into some cosplay :)

Sorry for taking forever to respond, but I am enjoying our conversation. Don't get too complex, sometimes simple is faster and all you need :)

You totally should! It's a lot of fun and it's only as hard as you wanna make it.

You're right, I'm doing work on another costume with liquid latex and it's been a bit of a nightmare, makes me miss insulation foam and gesso to be honest haha.

I get really jealous when I see costumes made out of fibreglass and look super smooth and professional quality, I'd like to be there someday but man it seems like a pain to work with!

Glad you've got both your health and your motivation back. Two things the world is frequently a bit short on. :D
